History forgot their names. Carnival never did.

In the flag, black is not absence. It is foundation: the African heritage of a people brought here in chains, who kept their culture alive through music and dance even when it was forbidden. The masquerade grew from West African masking traditions, where the dancer wasn't pretending to be someone else. They were carrying someone who came before.

So the front stays almost silent, all black except the flag sash. Turn around and the masquerade erupts in full color: towering headdresses, ribbons of green, gold and red, and the old cannon in the foreground, dwarfed by the dancers above it. Mourning and festival in the same breath. The ancestors, dancing.
